He was recognized for more than 15 years of commitment to the Society in which has led the Society on legislative and political matters to ensure the voice of orthopaedic surgeons is heard both in Hartford and Washington. His perseverance and fortitude to fight for quality, accessible healthcare for patients coupled with his legislative knowledge and political savvy has been instrumental in effecting positive legislative change for the medical profession and protecting patients Dr. Gerratana is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon practicing in New Britain where he also resides with his wife, Senator Terry Gerratana. He is a Connecticut home grown orthopaedic surgeon graduating from the University of Connecticut Medical School, where he also completed his orthopaedic residency. His participation in the Society spans decades and includes serving on the Society's Board and as a state Councilor to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Gerratana is senior attending surgeon at The Hospital for Central Connecticut in New Britain and served as the Past Chief of the Orthopaedic department. He has a longtime commitment to the City of New Britain previously serving as Police Surgeon, Commissioner of Park & Recreation, Chairman of the Board of Health, and is a longtime member of the New Britain Democratic Town Committee. Dr. Gerratana was awarded the UNICO Man of the Year in 1995 and served as the UNICO National President, New Britain Chapter, of which he is still an active member. Not only is he a passionate legislative crusader protecting the practice of medicine, he is a caring and compassionate physician who has served on Connecticut's HealthFirst Authority Task Force to study quality healthcare for everyone in Connecticut and has initiated charitable contributions from the Society for funding the AAOS Playground Build in Missouri and other charitable organizations including Brian's Hope. The Orthopaedist of the Year award is the highest honor bestowed by the Society, representing over 250 orthopaedic surgeons in Connecticut and seeks to foster the art and science of orthopedic medicine among physicians and to inform the public as to the nature of orthopedic medicine and its positive effect on their lives.
